Home Decor Color Trends for 2017

The New Year is an exciting time for many reasons, not the least of which is the highly-anticipated home décor and color trend predictions for the coming year.

Grays, blues, whites, and earthy hues dominated the color world in 2016. Time for a fresh start in 2017. Whether you’re a DIYer who thrives on experimentation with new color combinations or you prefer to collaborate with a professional designer to choose a new color scheme, here are the color trends for the New Year, according to the experts.

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017

Each year designers wait in anticipation for Pantone, a leading authority on color trends, to reveal their Color of the Year. A carefully-chosen hue that reflects what’s happening in the world, Pantone’s Color of the Year captures the collective mood of the global community.

This year Pantone’s pick is—drumroll, please—Greenery, “a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring.” Pantone calls Greenery “nature’s neutral,” which makes it suitable in a variety of color combinations, including neutrals, pastels, deep shades, and metallics.

Greenery is different from anything the company has chosen before, according to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“We love that feeling of newness, of realigning yourself and revitalizing yourself. A really important aspect is that the color has vibrancy and a little bit of brightness,” she told Elle Decor.

Pantone’s 2017 color palettes incorporating Greenery include “Grand Canyon,” featuring muted, earthy hues, and “Rev It Up,” a spread of bright, bold colors, from yellow to royal blue to bright orange.

Behr’s Color Currents 2017

Leading paint producer Behr has released 20 new limited edition colors, divided up into three palettes—Comfortable, Composed, and Confident—designed to suit different styles and personalities.

The Comfortable Palette features, soft, muted tones including wispy grays, dusted yellows, soft beige hues, and pastel pinks. The Composed Palette is rich with blue-purple hues, accented by sandy and gray tones. The Confident Palette is bold, with spicy reds, vivid greens, and shadowy blue hues.

While Behr’s three color palettes range from virtuous to daring, there is a common theme: All of the hues in the 2017 Color Currents collection have a muted, subtle quality, unlike the unapologetically-resplendent brights we’ve seen trending in prior years.

More Color and Design Trends for 2017

Pantone’s Eiseman predicts these additional trends for the coming year:1

• Traditional and contemporary maps as design elements

• Resurgence in popularity of black and white imagery

• Clashing color combinations that work when complementary design elements (i.e. furnishings, art) are used

• Green hues—to signify renewal, health, and wellness

• Bright colors that elicit emotion
